Seedsman sat down to ask our 10 Quick Questions to one of the most popular seedbanks in the world today, Dutch Passion.
1. How was Dutch Passion born?
In the 1970’s our founder, Henk van Dalen, began collecting and breeding with cannabis seeds which he found in the early Dutch cannabis imports that were arriving from all over the world in those days. He realised that it was possible to grow your own cannabis and often it was far superior to the often poor-quality, heavily seeded, imported cannabis. Some of the best varieties were selectively crossed and bred and Henk realised that many people would prefer to grow their own cannabis from seed rather than buy it on the streets. In 1987, the Dutch Passion Seed Company was formally established. 10 years later we were the first to learn how to make feminized cannabis seeds, something that many people at the time said was impossible with cannabis. Ever since then we have been busy trying to create the best cannabis seeds and busy trying to keep up with customer interest in new things such as autoflowering varieties, CBD-rich etc.
2. Why was Dutch Passion Created?
The aim is simple, we want the cannabis home growing community to be able to grow championship quality cannabis quickly, easily and conveniently at home without being an expert grower. Our mission is to internationally supply recreational and medicinal home growers with the highest possible quality cannabis seeds in countries where that is legally allowed. We believe that growing your own cannabis is, for many people, a better option than buying it on the streets where the quality and genetics are completely unknown. Whether you are growing medical or recreational cannabis you really should know what you are growing and whether it will suit you. In order to be the ‘complete seed bank’ we have a pretty wide selection of indica, sativa, hybrid, autofem, regular, CBD-rich varieties and specialist outdoor varieties.
3. What makes your seeds different?
We grow from our own gene bank of original genetics collected decades ago, these days many newer seed banks simply regurgitate existing varieties/genetics and put a new name on them. We are both proud and fortunate to have our own legacy varieties from the 1980’s and plenty of old original seeds to use for future projects. At Dutch Passion, we like to think we are a little bit different to the average seed bank. We are not afraid to explore new paths if they lead to greater simplicity and convenience for the home grower – our pioneering work with feminized seeds, autofem seeds and CBD-rich varieties is an indication of that. In order to differentiate yourself from the competition you need to be able to think outside the box from time to time. Our Frisian Duck outdoor variety is a good recent example of Dutch Passion innovation; it has webbed cannabis leaves so that you can’t identify the plant as cannabis until the plant is in bloom. Plenty of people have been growing Frisian Duck incognito in their back yards and greenhouses and mailed us to ask “why hasn’t someone thought of this before?”
4. What is your most popular strain?
Think Different, our feminized autoflowering variety is our best seller, followed by AutoMazar. It may seem strange to many people that we have automatics as best sellers. But thats simply a sign of the rapid improvement and popularity of the best modern autofem varieties. The best automatics are just as good as the best photoperiod varieties these days and some customers grow nothing else. Autos are flexible, you can grow them in any grow medium and they are usually ready to harvest 10-11 weeks after germination. Most customers set their grow room light to a 20/4 light cycle and pop an extra seed every couple of weeks, they harvest a new plant every couple of weeks and don’t need separate veg/bloom rooms like you would with traditional photoperiod varieties. The main reason customers give us for growing Think Different is that it is reliably strong and easy enough for first time growers, its a robust variety that can take abuse and that is always popular.
5. What unique strain would you recommend people try from your collection?
That’s a tough question because we know from experience that each person has different tastes and personal preferences when it comes to cannabis. Some will prefer a CBD-rich variety for the unique body stone which can significantly diminish medical pain. Others prefer a classy sativa skunk like Orange Bud. Older school tokers will be happy with a banging indica-dominant like our Blueberry which will put you down in the beanbag after a couple of drags on a joint. So there are a few really good recommendations I could give. But the one recommendation I will give is to try Mazar. Its still a staff favourite even after all these years, and its available in regular, feminized or auto seed versions. Its one of our consistently super strong varieties with a great taste and aroma. After you have smoked it your house will smell like a 1970’s Dutch coffeeshop, guaranteed. Even seasoned smokers can struggle to finish a joint, highly recommended.
6. If you could say why people should by from Dutch Passion in one sentence, what would that sentence be?
You don’t buy that many seeds a year, it’s one area of your life where compromise isn’t necessary so grow your own and choose a seed bank with a long tradition and proven record.
7. Any special/secret cultivation tips you can let our readers know about?
The two most common mistakes we see are people overfeeding their plants, and over-watering. New growers should be aware of that. People growing our automatics should also note that they will grow well under 24 hours of light, which some repeat customers think gives the maximum growth/production rates, although most people tend to grow them under a light regime of 20/4 (20 hours of light follow by 4 hours of darkness).
8. Do you have any brand new strains coming soon?
We can’t promise any specifics just yet, but each year we evaluate several new varieties which we come across and if we find something really special, we will introduce it. We expect new auto or two will come along for sure, based on some great American genetics. We also hope to have a new CBD-rich medical variety, and perhaps a really top quality traditional feminized photoperiod variety. Watch this space.
9. What does the future hold for Dutch Passion?
You will see us continuing to try new things, just like we always have done. We have some great new automatics coming out in the next year, along with some new photoperiod varieties and CBD-rich medical varieties. One thing we are interested in is the selective breeding of medical varieties rich in cannabinoids other than THC and CBD, so in a few years time maybe we will have e.g. CBG-rich varieties.
Dutch Passion has been around for decades and we aim to be around for many more, serving the needs of the self sufficient home grower. We have also set up a sister company called “Crazy LEDs & More”, as the name suggests it will focus on LED grow-light research and production. We firmly believe in the future of LED as a more efficient way of lighting your grow room than HPS. LED remains more expensive to purchase than HPS, at the moment, but less expensive to run and with less heat generation. LED is a grow room technology which will continue to improve and we will be at the forefront of it. At the moment LED is appealing to the early-adopters, but within a few years the costs and performance will make it a mainstream alternative to HPS with several benefits which the pro-growers are already taking advantage of.
