O, Cannabis – Happy Canada Day!

Since becoming the first industrialized nation to legalize recreational marijuana in 2018, Canada has led globally on progressive cannabis use and consumption.

While not without its own issues and a black market that still exists, Canada is still an example to the rest of the world on the many benefits financially and socially available through cannabis law reform.

The Canadian government’s three objectives of regulation (public health protection, reducing the illegal market, protecting younger people) were all designed based on years of evidence. Rising consumption, increased potency and criminal gangs were not hampered by illegality, rather encouraged.

Today, if you’re in Canada, you can buy and consume cannabis without fear of legal persecution, and now we’re just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

The Road to Reform : A brief History

1800s – Canada, like its southerly neighbours in the States, used hemp across various industries to help stimulate the economy.

1923 – The Act to Prohibit Improper Use of Opium and other drugs is introduced in Canada, officially making cannabis growing and consumption illegal countrywide. The first arrests of cannabis happened a decade later.

1960s – The culture of counterculture was spreading globally; Canadians began using more and more psychedelic drugs and cannabis.

1972 – The Le Dain Commission was established in 1969 to investigate the “non-medical use of drugs” after a rise in criminal charges for young Canadians. In 1972 they published their findings recommending the decriminalisation of marijuana possession. However, no changes were made to cannabis law.

2001 – Canada becomes the second country in the world (after Israel) to allow medical marijuana prescriptions.

2017 – The Cannabis Act Bill C-45 is presented to parliament; the bill proposes full legalization of personal cannabis consumption.

2018 – Bill C-45 is passed, and cannabis is officially legalized on October 17th.

Celebrating Canada Day with Cannabis

Coincidentally, Canada Day is celebrated on the same day as Cannabis Day!

Cannabis Day (not to be confused with World Cannabis Day, or 4/20)  was started in 1977 by the Alberta Legalization of Cannabis Committee in partnership with the Canadian Association to Liberate Marijuana.

I can’t imagine both falling on the same day is a coincidence.

In fact, if you’re a Canadian, the fact that your country holds a special place in global history when it comes to cannabis legalization should make you feel incredibly patriotic!

Canada has produced some incredible strains over the years, with many of Seedsman’s best sellers having Canadian origins or genetics.

Strains With Canadian Heritage

Pink Kush CBD 30:1

Pink Kush CBD Auto results from crossing classic Canadian Pink Kush CBD Auto with Pink Afghan CBD Auto strains. It is 90% indica, has a fast life-cycle and a CBD:THC ratio of at least 30:1.

As an auto-flowering strain, it will be suitable for just about all environments. Outdoor growers in warm climates will be able to achieve 2 or even 3 harvests per year. It displays an attractive pink colour in the buds.

The scent and taste resemble pine and damp forest with earthy hints of red fruits. CBD is rated at approximately 17% with just 0.5% THC. Its effect is a soft, light, relaxing body high.

BC Lowryder #2

BC Lowryder #2 is a cross between the strain that started the auto-flowering trend – Original Lowryder – and a Brazilian Santa Maria, an indica/sativa hybrid with good resin production, an exotic flavour and a soaring high. It combines the earthy, mossy character of Lowryder with the sweet spiciness of the Santa Maria.

BC Lowryder #2 can be grown almost anywhere, even outdoors in regions with short growing seasons. Yields are superior compared with that of the original Lowryder. It is ready to crop just 9 weeks from germination reaching a maximum of 50 cm tall and yielding between 28 – 42 g per plant with a THC level at 12 – 15%.

Jean Guy

A Quebec-born legend made famous by the Montreal Compassion Club, the Jean Guy is a Sativa dominant cross, a pungent euphoriant with a citrus/skunk smell indicative of its strong buzz.

It grows quickly, producing thick lateral branches and heavy colas. Jean Guy was featured in the first-ever marijuana ad in the New York Times.
