If you are new to cannabis cultivation, it can be helpful to be given a hand at the first potential hurdle – choosing your seed. With so many strains to choose from, and so much chat about the importance of good seed genetics, it can be hard to know where to start.
So, here at Seedsman we have carefully chosen three of the easiest to grow and most popular strains we have on offer for our Beginners Collection. Take the pressure of deciding from hundreds of strains and give your grow a head start with the photoperiod Bubba Kush, Critical Purple Kush, and White Widow feminised seeds. Alternatively choose our autoflowering collection for Beginners, which includes Alaskan Purple, Northern Lights and White Widow.
These collections offer you a taster of three knock out strains that should produce great yields for even the most novice gardener. The collections are also designed to save you money – by sampling three strains for a lower cost than buying single seeds or buying 3 of each (there is a 20% reduced cost on collections).
Beginner Collection: Photoperiod feminised seeds
Bubba Kush is one of the most consistently popular strains in the US and has gained recognition in the cannabis world for its sedating effects. A truly dominant indica in almost every way, Bubba Kush is fairly squat in stature but offers large leaves and a unique, packed bud structure whose colours are rainbow-like in their hue range. Suitable for all grow media, Bubba Kush is especially ideal for those working in smaller cultivation spaces. Due to its strong sedative effects, this strain isn’t suited for day-time use but can assist in the treatment of a number of medical conditions. Like most Bubba Kush strains, aromas of intense, sweet hash and spice are present.
Critical Purple Kush
Critical Purple Kush is not too dissimilar to the Critical plant except for the fact that it is a little but taller and has a longer inter-nodal length. It was bred by crossing Blueberry, Critical and Peyote Purple and is 80% indica. The taste combines pineapple and forest fruit flavours along with little nuances of lemon and Skunk derived from the Critical component. THC production is high with low CBD. The effect is extremely physically relaxing and it is recommended for medical usage.
White Widow is one of the best-known, and still one of the most potent, cannabis strains in the world. Originally created in the early 1990s its release to the coffee-shops of Amsterdam was met with universal rave reviews as canna-tourists flocked in their thousands to find out whether all the advance publicity for this white strain was true. It was and remains so today. Bred by crossing a Brazilian sativa strain with a highly resinous South Indian indica it is named after the plant’s frosty appearance which makes it white with resin. This is an easy strain to grow almost anywhere; its eight week flowering period ensuring that it will be ready to harvest outdoors in October in northern latitudes before the weather gets too cold. THC levels are high, around 20%.
Beginner Collection: Autoflowering
For an even easier first grow, it might be advisable to begin with the autoflowering range. The main advantage here is the quick turn-around time and the lack of extra care and attention these plants need. Most autoflowers will race from seed to harvest in 8-12 weeks and they don’t need the external cues (such as specific light cycles) that cannabis normally requires to start the flowering process. Other advantages include their compact size, making them easy to grow on balconies or small spaces, as well as their resilience. To put it simply, autoflowering feminised seeds eradicate many of the usual concerns you might have with a regular photoperiodic strain, and generally give you a faster harvest.
This year’s most popular Seedsman strain, Alaskan Purple Auto is a predominantly indica strain producing some very attractive yields in a short space of time. Created by crossing Alaskan Purple with a ruderalis strain, it has a sweet, fruity flavour and a strong relaxing high.
Alaskan Purple Auto is a sizeable plant for an auto with yields to match. Indoors its life cycle is around 8 weeks with some examples coming in at around the 7 week mark. When grown outdoors harvest time will be approximately one week later. Sweet ripe fruits abound on the palate, and with THC levels between 15 – 20% its relaxing indica effect doesn’t lack potency.
Northern Lights Auto
Northern Lights Auto was created by crossing Northern Lights with a ruderalis strain to add auto-flowering properties. It is a robust and resistant indica-dominant hybrid producing high levels of THC (23%) and minimal CBD (.5%), with good yields. As with the vast majority of auto strains it grows well in all growing environments. It starts to flower at week 8 or 9, meaning that two outdoor harvests per season is perfectly possible in all but higher latitudes. It has good resistance to mould, plant diseases and pests. Towards the end of its life a range of green, blue and purple shades will both surprise and delight growers.
The scent and taste are fruity and sweet with earthy pine and sweet ‘n’ sour plum jam coming to the fore. The effect is one of mental relaxation coupled with a strong body high.
White Widow Auto
Auto White Widow takes the legendary White Widow strain a stage further so that growers no longer need to worry about reducing photo-periods in order to stimulate the onset of the flowering cycle. The White Widow marijuana strain has long been one of the most popular of the Seedsman strains and with good reason. It is famous for its fast and hard-hitting high which evolves into a very pleasant, relaxing effect.
The introduction of ruderalis genetics allows harvesting of trichome-covered frosty buds in only 11 weeks from germination from vigorous, quite short-statured plants that enable discreet outdoor crops to be grown almost anywhere. Yields are pretty impressive; up to 125 grams per plant! The smoke is very smooth with a little spiciness to the taste and the THC level comes in at a very generous 18%.
